Mission: nature, shared land and water, fire safety
From www.ic.org/directory/heart-land/:
We have 13 owners and 120 acres which is paid in full. It's a canyon with an old live oak forest and artesian spring. However, in 38 years we have never had anything like a community. It's more like a neighborhood of camps where 1 of 13 owners lives full time year round, 1 full time but leaves for 4 months in the summer and 1 part time weekly. That group has created an off grid solar water pumping system. Some visit occasionally and the rest think of it as a real estate investment and live elsewhere. Some are supportive of what we do on the land and others are not.At my camp, I've had many years to build my own tiny house. My latest additions are what I call the art layer. (mosaic tile in the kitchen, carved wood decorating the sleeping loft and rock work in a few places around the exterior) I'm growing food in a few small irrigated cages to keep the animals out. I have created two hugelkultur beds which harvest rainwater draining off the fire road. I've had some success at growing a variety of vegetables, berries, stone fruits and almonds. Beyond my camp, I've made a network of trails. In the live oak woods are some granite rock outcroppings where a seasonal creek flows down through small pools. Morteros for grinding acorns are found here in the granite rock. Native plants are: miner's lettuce, watercress, prickly pear cactus, acorns and more. Red rocks in the shape of a heart are embedded in a bluff that juts out from the upper area of the land. I was married at that spot. I think the land is still very beautiful. I like the camp I have made and wish others shared my vision.
