Mission: Create and sustain a highly self-reliant off-grid community, composed of good, positive, friendly, compatible-enough people.
From www.ic.org/directory/walden-farm/:
I'm interested in forming a rural community in Saskatchewan. Land not yet acquired. It must be bought or leased. I want to create a quiet, natural, peaceful, safe, fairly remote, private place which emphasizes prepping and self-reliance. Chickens, farm animals, honeybees, organic gardens, greenhouses, off-grid energy, wilderness skills, hunting and gathering, pioneer practices, old time knowledge, skills and tools, modern methods and gear, etc, etc. The best of what is old and new to help us make living on the land very possible and comfortable as we like it to be. There can be no doubt that we are heading into rough times and hard times. I think the best and most sustainable living to be had will be in isolated, cooperative, rural communities with high levels of independence from the outside world and DIY ideas, skills and attitudes, as well as goods and services to sell and barter with others. But working for money is also necessary for many of us until the collapses come. Ideally, the land we acquire has woods and also clearings. Near a lake would be nice, too. I prefer mostly separate homes, cuz I like my private space as wwell as being with others, but members can do as they choose. Alternative construction methods welcome.Community named after Thoreau's book "Walden", due to themes of 1) Retreat 2) Respecting, Admiring and Learning From Nature 3) Increased Self-Reliance (Increased Self-Sufficiency) 4) Objective Analysis Of Everything 5) Introspection, Self-Discovery and Questing for Wisdom.
Not a shared-income community, but the costs, work, planning and vision must of course be shared. This started out as an idea about the way I want to live and it's still that, but now it's also my idea of how we will HAVE to live, in my opinion, dues to deteriorating global economic, environmental and social conditions.
Cooperative, wholesome, intelligent, joyful, creative, practical, sustainable, secure living is the goal. Sense of humour required and high tolerance of varied politics, culture, ethnicity, spiritual beliefs and practices, and of people with no politics or spiritual beliefs. I don't like being with people who all have the same few narrow ideas and can't stand diversity, but obviously we have to have enough common ground to make it work. Good if you have some rural skills already, but willingness to learn is the main thing. I grew up on a farm and still live on one. I have a fair bit of rural know-how and I study homesteading topics, collect books, etc. Potentially anyone can survive what is coming to the world if they have the right attitude and gain some good strategies.
Lots of space in this region, lots and lots of land and a low population, and lots of natural beauty and natural resources. Currently, we have four distinct seasons here. (Meaning that Weather Weirding is increasingly a factor everywhere and is changing normals.) Winters are long, but can be enjoyable. There are many interesting, enjoyable, useful things to do in wintertime in this part of the world, indoors and out, but you need a good dwelling and some other things. Summers are normally nice, with up to 20 hrs of daylight. Many types of vegetables, fruit, berries and many other things grow well here.
Nothing for Walden Farm has been started, so far, so discussing things is the first step towards any possibilities, plans, acquisition of land, etc. I will update this when things get rolling.
